Look of the Site

What colours will you use? When deciding on the colour scheme of your website, it is best to go with your business colours (the colours of your logo) to keep your brand identity. The colours of your website influence the feel and look.

What pictures will you use? You need to provide your logo and product or service photos if applicable.

Professional photos can make a page look smart and attractive. Be careful not to use photos that are copyrighted. Two options are - Stock photos that are charged on a Rights Managed license basis for a specific, one-time use, or Royalty-free photos that have a one-time fee.

Here are some great professional photo sites:

Photos.com

Shutterstock.com
istockphoto.com
Bigstockphoto.com

There are also afew sites that provide free photos, but make sure you are allowed to use them for commercial purposes.

And of course, using your own photos will make your site more personal.

What style of website? Choose a style appropriate for your industry and visitors. Here are some types:

Minimalist - Corporate - Cartoon - Retro - Futurist - Urban/Street

Site Plan

What is the purpose of your website? Is it sales (e-commerce) site or is it an informative site?

How many pages will you need? Is your site like an online business card just to show your contact details and have an online presence? Or is it for showing your products or services. Will you need a gallery for your users to view your works? The generic main pages for the average site include:

Home | About | Services | Contact

The best way to plan your site is to draw up a site map.
Example:

When dealing with alot of pages, the best start is to draw a logical site map tree that would be easy for your audience to navigate.

Who is your target audience? Are they likely to have high-speed or low-speed internet? This will impact your decision on whether to have high detailed pictures, or to have minamilistic pages with fast download times.

Site Name

What domain name will you choose? Top level domain (.com) or local domain (.co.nz)? Top level domains have higher priority in search engines, but only local domains appear in local searches. The best option is buy both, and the more domains you buy, the more likely people will find your site.

Types of Domain Names

How do I get my site on the internet? I will add your site to Google, and add keywords to your meta tags. It may take a little while to start coming up in the search engine. Then it is up to you to promote your site. Add your site to online directories. Having other sites link to your site helps get yours up higher in the searches. You could enlist the services of a Search Engine Optimiser.
